Sound familiar?

Nobody handed you the manual.

Somewhere around your twenties, the grown-up part kicked in. Rent. Work. A calendar. And the question “what do I actually want?” got filed under later.

Then somebody asks what your ideal life looks like, and your brain shows you a beach and a laptop. Cute. Not a plan.

It’s not a lack of ambition. Picturing a whole life from a blank page is brutally hard, so most people don’t try. They drift. They wake up in a life that just kind of happened to them.

Drifting is a decision too. It’s just one you didn’t get to make.

The fix isn’t more willpower. It’s a better starting point.

The trick

Stop imagining a whole life. Collect small pieces.

A quiet morning that felt exactly right. A room you didn’t want to leave. An hour that vanished. These are fragments, and they’re real evidence of what fits you. Every page asks for one small piece. The picture builds itself.

PARTS 1–5

Collect

Moments, rhythms, spaces, work you love, and the stuff you’re done with.

PARTS 6–7

Distill

Turn pictures into needs. See how real people assemble lifestyles.

PART 8

Ground

Put a price on it in dollars and in hours. Reality, meet dream.

PART 9

Explore

Sketch three different five-year lives. Score each one.

PARTS 10–11

Build

Prototype your day and week. Finish a one-page Blueprint and a 90-day plan.

After every part, a checkpoint: tick the list, rate how clear things are, write one sentence. By Part 11 those sentences become your Blueprint, so you can literally watch the picture come together.

Reality check

Then price it. In dollars and in hours.

Dreams that ignore rent are just daydreams. You’ll fill in a monthly cost map for your life now and up to three future versions, then spread your 168 weekly hours across what you do now versus what you want.

The gap between the two isn’t a failure. It’s your to-do list.

Not vibes

Built on real research.

The exercises borrow from well-known work on how people design and regret their lives. Summarized in plain English, with sources listed in the back.

The Odyssey Plan

From Stanford Life Design Lab’s Bill Burnett and Dave Evans: sketch three different five-year versions of your life, instead of hunting for the one perfect answer.

Relationships come first

The Harvard Study of Adult Development has followed people since 1938. Its most durable finding: the quality of close relationships is the strongest predictor of long-term health and happiness.

Regret is a compass

Daniel Pink’s World Regret Survey found the same four core regrets worldwide, and regrets about things not done were roughly twice as common as regrets about things done.

Commutes cost more than minutes

University of Waterloo research linked longer commutes to lower life satisfaction and a stronger sense of time pressure. You’ll price yours in hours.

Studies describe averages. You are the final authority on your own life, and the prototype section is how you find out. This workbook is a reflection tool, not financial, legal, medical, or mental health advice.

Is this for you?

Good fit. Bad fit.

This is for you if…

  • You feel like life is happening to you.
  • You can’t picture your ideal life, and blank pages freeze you.
  • You’re at a crossroads: new job, new city, new chapter.
  • You want a plan that survives contact with rent.
  • You’d rather write in it than scroll another quiz.

Skip it if…

  • You want someone to tell you what to do.
  • You want a get-rich plan or a personality test.
  • You need therapy, medical, legal, or financial advice. This is a reflection tool, not those.
  • You’re not willing to write a few honest sentences.
Questions

FAQ

What do I need to open it?

Any PDF reader. The free Adobe Acrobat Reader is the safest bet for the fillable fields. The auto-adding totals in Part 8 need Acrobat Reader; if your viewer skips them, you can type the totals yourself.

Can I print it?

Yes. It prints cleanly, so you can fill it in with a pen if you prefer.

I really have no idea what I want. Is it still for me?

That’s the exact person it’s built for. You never have to describe your ideal life from scratch. You just answer small questions about moments, rooms, rhythms and refusals.

How long does it take?

About 6 to 8 hours total, in sessions of 30 to 60 minutes. Do the parts in order and revisit any page freely.

Can I do it again later?

Yes. Keep a blank copy and use “Save as” for each round. Your answers on a life-changing year will look different from your answers on a calm one.

Does it work outside the US?

The exercises are general. Part 8 asks for your own local numbers. The bonus Hotel Dweller figures come from mostly US-based sources, so check them for your area.

Is this therapy or financial advice?

No. It’s a planning and reflection tool. For decisions about your health, money, or legal situation, talk to a qualified professional.

Who do I contact with a question or a download problem?

Email dan@dtdm.us.

One evening can start it.

Pick the first fragment. A morning. A room. An hour that disappeared. Write it down. That’s page one.
